This is how Mangal looks…
By IndiaFM News Bureau, August 11, 2005 - 06:07 IST
“6 months of continuous shoot and 1 complete month of prep.
The Rising” has been one of the longest projects I have worked on till date
Where do I start…?” - Makeup head, Slash Apeni
The adventure starts at Pataudi…
So once we got to the first location PATAUDI the team got the entire hair and make up area set up and then it was a 'KICK START'- before we knew it was a month and we were wrapping up for our next location -PUNE.
Moustaches missing!
We have a lot of memories pinned to Pune. It was a nightmare that we underwent. We use to have about 2 to 4 thousand extras and getting them ready along with our main cast was a little too hard. Also the location had no shade & the dry heat of pune…well we some how got through it, with a lot of missing facial hair and moustaches! The production had to call for more from London!
Peaceful at Panchgani
The best and peaceful location was Panchgani not literally, but comparatively. If we could say we actually had 5 minutes to ourselves then it was here in 'Panchgani'.
Help, make-up is melting!
Location 'Bombay Film City'- Very hectic also due to the humidity level being so high and shooting in non A/C sets and outdoors made life for the hair and make up team, HELL! There was a point where our products were almost melting in the make up room because of the heat- So we had to literally keep the A/C running through out the day even on our breaks!
%^*@# …what' are they saying…?
Finally the Tajikistan one takes the cake and the bakery too! It was a nightmare in a night mare itself. If it wasn't for the entire crew and of course the cast of” THE RISING “working like a team, this wouldn't have happened. The language problem created complete chaos! Nothing more to say about this particular location because I do not wish to think about it- it's been painful for every one. Hope the Director agrees with me!!
Makeup for Mangal…
Getting Aamir ready with his hair and make up was always a pleasure and fun because he always comes up with his own ideas and we worked it out together. He is full of pranks so you have to always be ready for anything. His hair had to be well maintained by using good shampoos/ conditioners and serums. Make up was very minimal with couple of touch ups here and there. We had to use tanning sprays (with air brush) at times when he needed it.
“Toby said he trusts me!”
One of the calmest actors I have yet seen or worked with. He never asked a question about how I was doing his hair or make up also he never asked for a mirror on set, not once! He always only said- “I trust you Slash “
Penny and I would give him a hair trim and color from time to time and use some styling products from AVEDA to keep them in place. His make up only consisted of under eyes coverage and few spots concealed. The rest kept very natural. Toby needed a tan spray from time to time too.
Rani & Amisha
Since the look is 1857 we had to maintain a very natural real looks for both Rani/Amisha- 'Less is more'. They had to get some hair pieces attached to get their character's look.
British & Indian Sub-talents
The British Sub-talents were a very calm and pleasant lot to work with, always jolly, singing and funny .Most of them had their own facial hair except for few of them so that was a load off our shoulders. Just a little make up & tan spray and they were ready for the shot. The Indians were very nice and easy to work with. Very enthu and a bunch of noisy boys .. ha ha… We used a lot of shine control products and Bryl cream to give the effect of oil.
Thanks!
My personal experience with the entire crew, cast and production was excellent. I learnt a lot from Penny Smith who is such a great hair-make up artist and at her age she is still kicking ass. From the day one to the last, I have no regrets because was simply worth it! Completely…!
Okay, my skin feels like shit, but then when I see what we
have created on the screen, the Ph balance can wait…
