“In the industry it's not who you want to work with but who wants to work with you” - Sujoy Ghosh
By IndiaFM News Bureau, October 5, 2005 - 02:57 IST
A couple of years back, a metrosexual musical movie called Jhankaar Beats infused a fresh lease of life in the new-wave cinema. Sujoy Ghosh who beat the clichéd formulas with Jhankaar Beats is ready to deliver with his second product Home Delivery. In an exclusive interview with IndiaFM, the new age director speaks about his new film and also takes the entire blame (or is it credit) of the film on himself.
What is Home Delivery all about?
It's a simple comedy and as you know it stars Vivek Oberoi, Mahima Choudhary, Ayesha Takia and Boman Irani. It's a story about a one day journey in a man's life and what he chooses to learn from the happenings. It's treated with a bit of comedy, a bit of real life and a bit of wacky humor.
Tell us about the different characters in the movie.
Vivek is a very talented guy in the film who knows everything. The talent is gone into his head. He's gets a chance to write a script for Karan Johar. That is why a lot of people are sucking up to him and he is enjoying every minute of it. He had also lost his childhood at a tender age. His mother died when he was very young and that is why he had to grow up very quickly. Deep inside he is still a kid and he wants to catch up on his lost childhood.
Ayesha is Vivek's fiancée. She is a very simple and educated girl and loves Vivek a lot. She is the fulcrum of Vivek's life. No matter what he does it always ends up with Ayesha.

I'm not at that stage where I can demand actors to come to me
|
Boman plays an elderly person who is probably at the end of the road and is not fit to get any job but on recommendation gets a job of a delivery man. It's a very interesting character.
Mahima plays a struggling actress who is looking for work.
Vivek Oberoi's last stint at comedy was Masti where his performance was not really appreciated. So what made you cast him in a comedy again?
You cannot categorize someone like that. First and predominantly he chose me. Let me make it clear. In the industry it's not who you want to work with but who wants to work with you. I'm not at that stage where I can demand actors to come to me. Secondly, Vivek is a pretty good actor and I hope what you see on screen in Home Delivery brings out the best in him. I think after Juhi Chawla he has the perfect comic timing.
Reportedly there are 21 songs in the film?
No, there are going to be only 8 songs in the album. Vishal and Shekar keep on recording songs and I don't know for what. There might be about 14-19 songs in the background. I'm very confused right now for all the confusion created by Vishal and Shekhar and only they have to sort this out (laughs).
It seems there is a song picturized like something out of the 80's. Something that Jeetendra and Sridevi would have danced to?
I am a big time fan of Jeetandra, Mithun, Bappi Lahiri, Sridevi and just about everyone else. I just love old films and know every dialogue by heart whether it's Qaidi or Himmatwala, etc. So this is my way of doing things and I had great fun doing it.
Tell us about the music.
Music is good. You ask me anything and I will say it's good. So that's my standard answer.
OK, then how is the music as compared to Jhankaar Beats?
I hope it's a step up from Jhankaar Beats. A lot of people have put their trust in us so it is important to take their trust a little further and we are presenting the music a step above Jhankaar. Maybe not a huge step but a significant one nonetheless!

A movie is like a meal which has to be perfectly balanced
|
How did you convince Karan Johar to do a cameo in the film?
Very simple. I just called him up and he said yes. He is a very good human being. He actually said yes before even hearing the script.
Future plans?
All depends on Home Delivery I guess. If it does well I have a future (laughs).
Do you want to attempt other kinds of genres?
Yes definitely. I believe everything should be tried. A movie is like a meal which has to be perfectly balanced. Whether it is action, satire, mystery or whatever. I would prefer to have all these elements in my movie if given a choice and make a perfect movie or at least hope to make a perfect movie. I have no genre preferences in particular. Home Delivery is absolutely different from Jhankaar.

What you will see on screen is entirely blamable on me
|
The producer of Jhankaar Beats (PNC) are releasing their movie Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena a week after Home Delivery. So is there any love lost?
No. See you are interviewing me because of Pritish Nandy. He's the one who gave me the spring board to leap from. We will definitely work again in the future.
How are Sahara and Percept as producers?
Very good. Anybody who doesn't interfere with me is good for me. I get to make a movie I want to make, so what you will see on screen is entirely blamable on me. So if you don't like anything you can tell me Ba@#%#d! That's crap.
