By IndiaFM News Bureau, October 13, 2005 - 06:10 IST

The Nathula Pass in Sikkim, among the remotest places in India plays host to Shilpa and Shamita Shetty, in the latest episode of the much acclaimed and award winning series “Jai Jawan” on NDTV.

The sisters joined the jawans of the Indian Army for three days at the Indo-China border and got to experience life as experienced by our brave jawans in hostile terrain. The Shetty Sisters reached Nathula after an excruciating journey of two days facing arduous conditions of extreme cold, rain, sleet, not to mention lack of oxygen at such heights. Their first move on arrival was to pay homage to the martyrs of the Indo-China War. They also managed to interact with a few Chinese soldiers across the border. Although the Chinese soldiers did not speak English or Hindi, and had to use a translator to bridge the language barrier, they seemed thoroughly charmed by the Shetty sisters.

Bidding the Chinese soldiers goodbye, Shilpa and Shamita visited the Indian Jawans at their bunkers and held a mini talent hunt at 14,500 feet. They even carried dozens of laddoos from home to distribute to the brave Jawans. Thereafter, coming down to the helipad, in much better breathing conditions the sisters coaxed the Jawans there into an informal Antakshari session. Later that day, the Shetty duo were introduced to heroes of a different kind – the animal Unit, the Mules who are the lifelines of soldiers based high up in the mountains as they carry necessary supplies up and down the steep mountains.

Wrapping up an exhausting day, the Shetty sisters made their way back to Gangtok, where they met soldiers who were practicing a Guard of Honour Parade. Here, they witnessed the discipline and the dedication practiced by the army. The sisters interacted with the band members and the Jawans and even joined them in a traditional Nepali dance.

The evening saw the actresses read out messages for some of the soldiers who had not met their families for months together. As the video messages played before their eyes, one could clearly see tears of joy well up. The duo admitted that these three days with the Indian Jawans would be their most cherished memories.
