“So much of skin on display, there is no more shock value to it!” Click here to add this article to My Clips

By IndiaFM News Bureau, March 23, 2005 - 05:51 IST

Skin ain't sin
Atleast Shamita & Udita think so. They are bold, beautiful and bindaas And are two faces that will be scorching the screen this Friday. Shamita Shetty & Udita Goswami play 'the woman' and the 'other woman' respectively in Zeher. You are in a dual treat as the two basking beauties talk to IndiaFM about skinshow, stardom and what their poison is…

You sang 'Intezaar…' in Paap but it's the audience that's been doing a lot of waiting.
Yeah, I guess so. But once you watch Zeher, you'll admit that the wait's been worth it.

“I play a woman who suffers physical abuse”
Which is the Udita that Zeher has to offer?
Well, I play this woman who is suffering a bad marriage. She is a victim of physical abuse. Her husband physically torments her. She is facing a lot of rough weather. The hero's marriage is on the rocks too, which tempts them into an illicit affair.

Zeher has a strong sexual undercurrent. True?
Know what, I prefer not to talk about it. It's 'much ado' about nothing! Note, nobody will ask me how it was to perform a particular scene, a lot of attention is given to the bold aspect of my character which is quite incidental.

"Emran is such a funny guy! We think alike & talk alike"
Do you think we are prudish when we say that our camera doesn't enter the bedroom?
Very much! Its only because people want to watch it, that skin flicks are being made. So why deny the fact?

Have you seen Murder?
Yes!

What did you think of it?
I thought it was a fantastic film. Besides having a sexual sting, the film had an interesting plot that kept the people rooted to their seats.

But do you agree when I say that skin can't alone sell a film at the ticket window?
Totally! Skin can titillate but can't really sell a film. There is so much exposure and lots of skin on display that the shock value now is close to nil. You have to have a taut plot at the centre to drive a film to success.

How were your work vibes with Emran?
Emran is such a funny guy. We bonded extremely well thanks to the fact that we are from the same age bracket. There was never an effort to outdo each other or pretend to be a scholar. We think alike and talk alike.

“My poison…would be dogs!”
What do you think of Mohit as a director?
I think he has done a brilliant job. From the sweet boy who came to my place for a narration to the sharp director on the sets, Mohit has been quite a surprise.

Any personal pick in the music album of the film…
I quite like 'Agar tum', I think its very expressive of a lover's longing.

What do you think about the bold and brazen female leads that the Bhatt camp throws up?
I love their female characters. It's only a Bhatt film that showcases liberated female characters. Add to that, they have the expertise to market it such that the film works.

Finally, since we are talking about 'Zeher', what is your poison?
Dogs! Yeah, that will have to be it.

Time to turn the spotlight on the other beauty, Shamita Shetty

You last worked with Dharmesh Darshan and have now teamed up with Mohit. What's it like to work with a seasoned director on one end & a debutant on the other?
Dharmesh has a distinct style of his own. But Mohit like all newcomers wants to push the envelope, do that extra bit. Give everything a 100%.

What's your role in Zeher?
I play a cop in the film, she's also a wife. She is an independent thinker and has her own definite views on life. I would like to believe that she is the woman of today.

"I play a cop in the film. She is today's woman"
What is the kind of work that went into it?
We worked real hard on her look. Since she is a cop, we went in for a clean, non-fussy look. So the clothes have straight, clean cuts. Nothing too overtly glamorous.

Emran is this mad-mad guy. Your equation with him…
Like you said, he is such madness. Emran is always cracking, kidding and having a blast. That kind of de-stresses the entire atmosphere. He is such fun to have around.

"Mohit might be a debutant, but he knows his job very well!"
What about Mohit? Your work vibes with the debutant…
Hey, let me warn you, this might be his first outing as a director but the guy is so sure about every detail on the set, it keeps you on your toes constantly. He really knows his job. Besides which, Mohit helped me understand my character so much better.

Your take on sexuality on the silver screen…
I am all for sexuality if it's captured aesthetically.

While on 'Zeher', what's your poison?
My poison? Hmm…chocolates! I can never get enough of them!
