Kissa Moochon ka… Click here to add this article to My Clips

By IndiaFM News Bureau, June 23, 2005 - 05:49 IST

'Moochien ho toh Nathulal jaisi' was the last time moustaches created some interest in Bollywood. Like its cousin from South, Tollywood; Bollywood has never been a great fan of its heroes donning them. With a few exceptions like Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor, all its denizens prefer a clean look. After a long gap, the mooch look is suddenly creating waves again. The interest got triggered because Aamir Khan went around town with his Mangal Pandey look. And now the hottest topic of discussion is SRK's Rajasthani moustache in Paheli.

Lets take a look at a few actors who have tried to mingle with the mooch earlier:

Akshay Kumar- Bewafaa & ATHWS

Off late Akki has been seen in moustache in two films, one as a senior military officer with a poet's heart in Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo and other as a jilted lover and musician in Bewafaa. While the look in ATHWS was typically that of an Army officer, the beard and the moustache in Bewafaa was the first of its kind worn by any actor. The blonde colour added to the macho Canadian look, and nobody could have been able to carry the look as stylishly as Akki did.

Amitabh Bachchan - Khakee & Lakshya

After making the French beards a rage during KBC times, Amitabh retained it in all his films since his comeback. Perhaps that was also his lucky charm. In Khakee he chucked the beard to look like a fit DCP leading a deadly mission and succeeded in leaving a mark. The mustached military look of Lakshya was an extension of the Khakee look.

Vivek Oberoi - Masti

This was probably the clumsiest look donned by Vivek so far and we couldn't thank the filmmaker enough for keeping it brief in the film.

Arjun Rampal - Vadaa

Playing a visually impaired business tycoon in Vadaa, Arjun Rampal's chocolaty face gave way to a moustache and hence a more intense look in the film. Arjun had two looks in the movie, the clean-shaven and the mustached. He had negative shades to his character in the mustached look.

Sanjay Dutt - Mission Kashmir

Sanjay Dutt may have carried a moustache before this film, but this was the first time he looked so brooding and intense on screen. The character would have been incomplete without the trademark military moustache. The character also demanded an elderly look as he played Hrithik's father in the movie. He did not have the moustache in the initial reels when Hrithik's character was shown as a kid.

Ajay Devgan - The Legend of Bhagat Singh & Company

A mooch for the lanky rebel of pre - independence era was a must. It was equally must for the deadly underworld don Malik. The silences of a clean-shaven Malik probably would not have created that strong an impact as much as this stern looking one's did.

Abhishek Bachchan - Bunty Aur Babli

One amongst the many con characters, this mustached Bunty tried selling Taj Mahal to a foreigner! No matter how gracefully Abhishek carried this authentic Lucknowi look, the character faded in the crowd of other equally short-spanned cons and failed to register any impact.

Aamir Khan - The Rising

This was the most talked about of all the mooches as Aamir carried it around for 18 months. The perfectionist that he is, Aamir had specially grown it for this film and stayed with it till the final stage of filming. He wasn't willing to part with his mooch & locks even after shooting phase but he had to chop it off for his next film Rang De Basanti. Once he did that, Aamir looked younger and swankier than ever.

Shah Rukh Khan - Paheli

The last time SRK carried a moustache was in Army, which went unnoticed, thankfully. Widely talked about factor of Paheli is SRK's long, feeble, authentic looking Rajasthani mooch. No matter how uncomfortable SRK feels about all the attention that his mooch is getting; he cannot deny the fact that his hatke look is responsible for the curiosity that the film has created.
