The Chopras are one of the biggest and the oldest name in the Indian film industry. Who doesn’t know them? BR Chopra was the first in the family to enter films. An M.A in English Literature from Lahore University, he started his career as a film journalist. After the partition, he moved to Delhi and then came down to Mumbai and started directing films. In the year 1955, B R Chopra started his own production house called B.R Films and became a producer-director. Following his footsteps, his younger brother Yash Chopra too got into film making. Yash Chopra in fact made his directorial debut under the banner of BR Films with the film Dhool Ka Phool. After that, he continued to make films like Dharm Putra, Waqt and Ittefaq for B R Films, until he started his own production house Yash Raj Films. Today, as we all know, Yash Raj Films is the biggest and the most successful banner in Bollywood.

Another talent in the family was Ravi Chopra, B R Chopra’s son, who too shared similar passion for films. His last release Baghban was a superhit at the Box Office and now he is ready to release his next film Baabul.

Talking about his relationship with Yash Chopra, Ravi Chopra says that they both have grown up together like brothers. Says Ravi Chopra, “Though Yash Chopra is my uncle by relation, he is more like an elder brother to me.” The reason behind this is an interesting fact that the both Yash Chopra and Ravi Chopra grew up and lived under the same roof since BR Chopra’s was a joint family. Yash and Ravi Chopra, in fact, shared the same room for years. “We used to live together then. In fact we shared the same room right till he (Yash Chopra) got married.” That is the reason why the two still share a great rapport. In fact when Ravi Chopra began his film career, the first film that he was an assistant director on was Yash Chopra’s Ittefaq (1969).

Yash Chopra has so much respect for his elder brother B R Chopra that even today he visits his elder brother every week and spends time with him. Due to old age, B R Chopra is not very fit physically now. However, he has a daily routine of visiting the B R Films office every single day and having lunch with his son, Ravi Chopra.

Probably this explains why the Chopra’s have been able to give out films with strong values. Since, even in today’s modern times, and age of nuclear families, this family remains closely knit.
