THE FILM

Not just in the recent years but perhaps even in a few decades gone by, Race would go down as the film that has the MOST number of twists ever. So much so that this 150 minutes tale had at least half a dozen twists which, by simple mathematics, makes it a one every 25 minutes.

He is a killer. No, he is not. She is double-crossing him. No, she is not. In fact, she is triple crossing him. He is dead. No, he is alive. Or is he really? He is doing it for money. No, he is doing it for love. Oops, turns out, it is for love. Errr no, actually it is due to family troubles!

This is why one is exposed to the world of 'bhai bhai na raha', 'pyaar pyaar na raha' and even 'dushman dushman bhi nahi raha. You can't trust anyone. You can't love anyone. You can't expect your confidante to be your own. And the worse, what you see also doesn't turn out to be what you eventually get.

Well, never mind the various spins that Race takes because all said and done the film moves at such a frantic pace that you stop worrying about the twist that was thrown on you 12 minutes back and instead get busy looking for the one which would come your way 12 minutes hence. Add to that, some jaw dropping stunt sequences and you know that Race is one helluva job done by Abbas Mustan who clearly came up with their best flick after Baazigar.

In this tale of two brothers and two gorgeous women indulging themselves in a whirlpool of double crossing (and in certain cases even triple crossing), Race is one zingy masala entertainer which deserves a second dekko even after the suspense is out. And that's because you want to go back and revisit each and every gesture, each and every mannerism, each and every whisper and each and every incident to understand how people plotted murder and didn't think twice before going any distance to see the downfall of the one whom they loved...and hated!

Race is one 'masala' entertainer, which stays on to be the biggest money-spinner of the year so far. This is also perhaps the only film of 2008, which not just met the sky-high expectations that one had from this multi starrer but even exceeded them.

Slickly shot with some great visuals and chartbuster music by Pritam, Race wouldn't have been the same without it's two most solid pillars - Allan Amin's action and Salim-Sulaiman's background score. Clearly, these three men come up with one of the best efforts of their career and it would be a shame if they do not walk away with all the awards early next year.

On the other hand, Saif and Bipasha may not actually be hoping for awards here but they indeed come up with solid performances. Katrina is great as an eye candy while Akshaye Khanna, Anil Kapoor, and Sameera Reddy provide adequate support.

Race is a solid entertainer, which engages its viewers from start to end. Don't miss the beginning. Don't miss the end. Don't miss it all. Because there is something happening every 25 minutes!

CONCLUSION

The moment Race begins, you know that it is not going to be an ordinary tale. After all one can hardly remember a film where within 20 minutes you get to know that a leading lady is actually plotting the downfall of her lover with his own brother. The brother himself is one mean soul who could go to any lows to ensure that he gets not just his share of pie but an entire pie. But then, this is 21st century and the film comes from director duo of Abbas Mustan who go ahead with a holds-no-bar approach to establish the falling moral values of the current society we live in.
