  Music Reviews
By Joginder Tuteja, August 17, 2005 - 11:31 IST

There was a time when Isha Kopikar was slotted as an item girl after the stupendous success of her 'Khallas' [Company]. Films like 'Krishna Cottage', 'D' and 'Kyaa Kool Hain Hum' came a bit later where she got opportunities to prove her mantle. But in the interim she also signed movies like 'Haseena' that came her way. Now ready for release, 'Haseena - Smart, Sexy, Dangerous' has Isha Kopikar in the title role where she has Preeti Jhangiani, Kiran Jhanjani and Raj Babbar as her co-stars. Produced by Sanjay Thakur and directed by Vicky Ranawat, 'Haseena' has music and lyrics by Rajan Bawa. With near to nil hopes of anything substantial coming out of the album, one plays on the music.

Sowmya Raoh begins the album with 'pump-up-the-jam' kind of a pulsating number 'Choom Choom'. A fast paced westernized item track of 'come, hold me, kiss me' genre, it is a non-stop fast paced number with a near-breathless rendition by Sowmya. A highly orchestrated number, if it wasn't for the cheesy lyrics, it would have been a good discotheque track due to its high on pace and beats treatment. The song is fit to be played while on a fast drive on a highway as it doesn't give you any time to sit back and relax.

The evergreen pairing of Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik come together for 'Khuda Jaanta Hai' that is nothing but one of the hundreds of conventional love songs soaked in melody that one heard in the 90s. With the fast changing taste of the audiences, this track doesn't come across as anything more than ordinary and it is due to the presence of the veteran singers that the song can be still heard till the end. Just average!

Sowmya returns to the scene with 'Hulchul Si Hai', a song of seduction which is about 'hulchul, badan, aag' and similar things that go along in a song of such genre. A track with cries of 'Let Me Hold You' and stuff alike, there is a bit of 'oohs and aahs' too thrown in but the song fails to rise to anything above ordinary. The good part of the track is that it isn't noisy and hence doesn't completely shy away the listener from running away from the track. There is a male version of the track too with composer-lyricist Rajan Bawa himself joining the fray. The song begins with seductive cries of a female with Bawa joining the fun soon. His voice is just about average and is more suited for a pop track rather than playback singing.

Anyways the composer-lyricist-singer ropes in equally average female singer Marina Dee for the love duet 'Jabse Hua Mujhe Pyar'. With sub-average lyrics, the song hardly manages to make any impression whatsoever, what with the female portion of the song being nothing but a remixed version of yesteryear's 'Hai Sharmaaon Kis Kisko Bataon Apni Prem Kahaniyan'. Nope, this is definitely not one's idea of hearing some good Bollywood film music.

A celebrations track 'Sajan Mera Mehendi Laaya' based on the traditional music that we have been hearing for about 3 decades now, is still passable due to some spirited singing by Alka Yagnik. Sapna Awasthi's joins in fun too in this track that somehow manages to make you sit through the entirety.

In nutshell, there is not even a single song that is a reason good enough to go for the album of 'Haseena'. Thankfully the tracks aren't downright disasters due to which you can still hear them if played in front of you. But it is quite doubtful that you would willfully buy and play on the songs of 'Haseena'.
