  Music Reviews
By Faridoon Shahryar, June 28, 2007 - 14:56 IST

Salim-Sulaiman is an extremely talented duo. They have delivered a super hit score in Karan Johar's Kaal. They are also regular with Nagesh Kukkoonoor in films like Iqbal and Dor for which their music has been appreciated. But still, it is strange that such a talented team continues to be known more for their background score in big films rather than churning out songs in them. Their score in Chain Kulii Ki Main Kulii hasn't been promoted at all. In fact the music was released only a few days before the release of the film. Let's find out if this film adds to the prestige of the small repertoire of these background score specialists.

Bowler ko dekh ke thodi tasan tu de, phir thoda tu aaju baaju fielding ko tu dekh le, kar de us paaon ko fix, ja thoda down the pitch tu poora zor laga ke maar de oocha six six.chain kuli ki main kuli ki.The attitude-prone lyrics gives a thumping start to this techno-hip hop number Chain Kulii Ki Main Kulii that thrives on a simple fast beat. Now put your hands in the air..Kunal Ganjawala sings in a steady lower-middle scale making sure that the kids can sing along with him. Yes it's a kiddie number with the hookline Chain Kulii Ki Main Kulii repeated in a child's voice (layered in Kunal's voice) modulated with sound effects. There are techno keyboard fillers, drum rolls and brass sections to form the part of music arrangements. The song succeeds in appealing to the target group of kids. But too many repetitions, makes it monotonous.

Tu kar de dhamaaka, sab dekhen aaj tamasha, har ball ko de tamacha.Kailash Kher helms Dhoom Dhadaka, a Bhangda-dhamaal track high on power-booster energy. Somehow it reminds you of Chak De Phattey sung by Kailash in Khosla Ka Ghosla which happens to be a fine track. So, what do you find here? Hrishikesh Kamerkar, John Stewart, Mangal Mishra and Salim Merchant form a deadly quartet of backing vocals adding heavy fuel to the Baisakhi-Night-Bon-Fire voice of Kailash Kher. The rhythm designing involves an effortless interplay of rustic dhol, clap-rhythm beats and vocally generated sounds adding to the rhythm of the song. It's a voice-n-rhythm based number, with occasional keyboard filler thrown in. Dhoom Dhadaka is a masti filled number that shall surely find its takers.

Kishore Kumar in a Classic Hip-Hop mode! Well, the evergreen singer fits into any mould. Effortlessly. Salim-Sulaiman wonderfully merges Kumar's classic Hum The Woh Thi Aur Sama Rangeen Samajh Gaye Na with contemporary generation's choice of funky beats to a very good effect. Kumar's fresh-lime-soda vocals have been brilliantly mixed with a simple add-on drum beat (with rolls thrown in) and DJ utterances like keep it moving, gotta keep it moving uncannily jamming with Kishore Da's Jaate the Japan Pahuch gaye Cheen, samajh gaye na. Music arrangement has been kept simple in this song originally composed by. On one hand you have keyboard fillers enlarging into an occasional melody line in the background or you have quirky sound effects like the sound of a burp with which the song ends. It's clear the song is meant for kids or for the ones who are young at heart. Well, it's another way of remixing where the voice of the original has been retained. Maybe it should be the only way. Cherish!

Ichak daana beechak daana, daane upar daana ichak daana..Again, a fantastic way to present a golden oldie. The original voices have been retained, the tempo has been whipped up to a reasonable frenzy and the rhythm design has been kept fast-n-simple without undue modulations. The song starts off with the original dholak-manjeera combo and gels with a contemporary brass section. And this is the pattern throughout the course of the song as a few of the original fillers have been retained with some contemporary keyboard generated fillers. This song is layered with riddles and principal voices of Mukesh and Geeta Baali are retained while a chorus of children answers the pahelis. It would be interesting as to how this chic new version of the playful classic has been utilized in the film as it can be filled with a galaxy of colours. Play it again-n-again number.

Electric guitar riffs and simple da na da na backing vocals welcomes the brimming-with-honesty singing of KK in Khula Aasman which is undoubtedly the best original composition of the album. The lyrics is inspirational and the trajectory of this song reminds one of Aashayen from Iqbal (composed by Salim-Sulaiman as well). No, there's no apparent similarity in the two tunes except in the form, the texture and the subject of this song. It is a Soft Rock number that relies on fantastically well placed sections of electric guitar, piano, acoustic guitar, backing-n-harmony vocals, drums and rolls. Expectedly KK has sung it beautifully. He is the perfect choice for a song that involves graduating from the middle octave to the high pitched ecstasy in a fluid motion. Khula Aasmaa is one of the best original compositions of the year so far.

Sunday Chain Kulii Ki Main Kulii is a high-on-kiddie-attitude song that could have made a hit Broadway Musical proud. It is high on playful violin, queering brass, loud trumpet fillers, spooky-yet-funny vocal rhythm and a bunch of charged-up child voices having a great time getting the exclusive attention. It's a playful number having the flavour of a Broadway with the hint of Soul that caters specifically to the kids market.

It is evident that the well balanced music score of Chain Kulii Ki Main Kulii could have created a definite impact if it would have been promoted more aggressively. Not only the original compositions are laced with energy, even the two new versions of erstwhile classics have been packaged in a new way that ought to be commended. For, the original voices have been retained and they have been draped in contemporary musical attire. Yes, this album is worth a buy, especially, if you want to treat your kids to some fun moments.
