Till now we have heard all of this...haven't we:
1)The Hero brings together the hit pairing of Sunny Deol and director Anil (Gadar) Sharma together
2)The Hero has the same music director as Gadar - Uttam Singh
3) The Hero has some of the final works of the late genius Anand Bakshi
4)With The Hero, Time Magnetics make a grand re-entry into Bollywood film production
5)This is their costliest ever venture budgeted at over Rs. 50 crore
6)Priyanka Chopra makes her debut with The Hero and.......
finally
7)The Hero will (hopefully !!) bring out Bollywood from its present crisis.
OK !! So the promos have created a lot of excitement about the movie. Thriller feel of the movie (that carries the tag - A Love Story of a Spy) does generate enough heat. But what about the music? Where does it stand? Does it carry the same curiosity? Does it have a repeat value? Will it be one of the reasons why audience would really flock the theatres to watch the first grandeur epic of 2003 - THE HERO? These are some of the questions that will be answered here on !!!
The fact is that none of the songs from THE HERO are really exciting enough to be a USP of the flick.'Dil Main Hai Pyaar' (which is for some strange reasons repeated thrice in the album) is a very weak number that may not appeal to any class of audience. A song blended with the 80's touch, it is sung by Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik and Jaspinder Narula. But none of the experienced singers are able to bring this romantic song out of mediocrity. 'Tum Bhi Na Maano' by Hariharan and Alka Yagnik, and written by Javed Akhtar is an even weaker song with no great melody whatsoever. A slow number, it is a perfect song for a break !!
Hmmm...listen to this..'Maari Koyal Ne Aisi Kook' - and guess which age do we really belong to. On one side, The Hero is supposed to be a new age movie with all high tech gizmos and stuff alike and here we are still listening to some 'pahaadi' folk sung by Shardool Sikandar and Jaspinder Narula. Still interested..are you?? 'In Mast Nigahon Mein' is a situational song by Udit Narayan, Priyanka Chopra and Amrish Puri. A track set in villain's den, it may make better sense in the course of movie as it isn't very appealing audio-wise. Again - a dud !!
'Tere Shehar Ka Kya Hai Naam' is the only typical Bollywood song in the movie about two hearts meeting each other. But then, Sunny paaji has been asking girls for their 'shehars' for past 20 years now. So, isn't it high time now that he does something different now. Nevertheless, it is the only track that you can actually listen to, primarily due to the effort of Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan.
Music of THE HERO doesn't have anything great or extraordinary to offer. Whenever you take a movie's budget into account, you consider something really substantial from the music which is relative to the cost spent on filming the movie. Mughal-E-Azam, Pakeezah, Shaan, Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Dilwaale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge, Lagaan, Devdas to name a few. From BIG movies like these there was always an expectation from the music of the film as well. And more often than not, the music has delivered. An obvious scenario because a producer/financier has to always look at all aspects of film-making to sell the product.
