  Music Reviews
By Joginder Tuteja, February 3, 2004 - 16:27 IST

A tale about Kashmiri pandits and the problems they are facing in their own motherland due to the ongoing tensions, 'Sheen' is a heart-warming story of a Kashmiri family based in Kashmir. Directed by Ashok Pandit, 'Sheen' has been ready for quite a few months but is ready for release now after 'Sahara India Mass Communications' took it under it's wings. 'Sheen' stars debutante actress 'Sheen' in the title role along with Raj Babbar and Tarun Arora. Shot in the picturesque locations of Kashmir, Sheen has music by Nadeem Shravan and lyrics by Sameer.

'Yeh To Kashmir Hai' is a sweet'n'melodious duet by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik made even more beautiful by Sameer's lyrics. Poetry about blooming love in the valleys of Kashmir is heart warming and locations make the track look even better. The song may not turn out to be a chart-buster but the lovers of soft music would want to listen to this one repeatedly.

Next follows 'O Sanam Kuja Beri', a song inspired by Kashmiri folk music which is rhythmic and sung well by Sonu Nigam and Sapna Mukherji. A fine track, it has that Nadeem Shravan stamp which always works. Chorus is effective as well.

Love song that follows next has third straight different pair of singers - Kumar Sanu and Nirja Pandit - who sing a typical Nadeem Shravan - Sameer combination song - 'Tum Dua Karo'. Slightly reminiscent of the team's earlier hit 'Hum Yaar Hai Tumhaare....Humse Mila Karo', 'Tum Dua Karo' strands into the same territory of 'pyaar-ishq-mohabbat-shaadi and mehendi'. A decent track, as like the earlier two numbers it doesn't stand out as an out-rightly memorable song but does well in the flow of the narrative.

'Sheen theme' has a touch of class and instantly reminds of the memorable theme music from 'Bombay'. One of the better movie themes to have been composed in recent times, the prime difference between the theme music of Bombay and Sheen is that while in former the music was haunting and at times scary, in latter it is more painful and touches your heart. Tauseef Akhtar doesn't have much to do in this track which is mainly instrumental.

'Main Ladki Kashmir Ki' by Kavita Krishnamurthy is - as the title suggests - a track about a girl from Kashmir who is full of life and is all praises for the place where she is born and brought up. An average track, it is merely a gap-filler and it won't be surprising if the track is utilized as a pop-corn break by the movie goers. Nothing great about the number, it is pretty routine and fails to do anything more than that.

It can't get more depressing when a song plays with lyrics like 'Aao Jannat Mein Jahannum Ka Nazara Dekho'. Though the makers of the track have succeeded in doing exactly that, one can't expect such a song to be played in the households day and night. This lengthy song sung by Kumar Sanu, Sonu Nigam, Udit Narayan, Mohd. Ajiz, Shreya Goshal and Nirja Pandit is about the pathetic living conditions in the valley due to the onslaught of the trouble-makers and the plight of lakhs of innocent human beings living there. A track that may do well as a background piece in accordance to the situation in the movie, it is strictly no-no when it comes to it being popular among the audio listeners.

Sabri brothers - Saeed Sabri, Farid Sabri and Amin Sabri - return with a qawalli 'Sahara Chahiye' written by Sayeed Ali Miya Baqai. Different in terms of lyrical value, is should be liked by those who appreciate the nuisances of the genre of qawallis.

Music of 'Sheen' does well in parts and its main strength is its simplicity. But apart from that, it doesn't boast of a single superb number that may raise the prospects of the album from average to good, hence enhancing the musical sales. At best the album may do well with word-of mouth.
