There was a time in early 80s when Jeetendra's sagging career was revived with the quickie masala flicks from the South. Most of them were over the top comedies/social dramas, which were attached to the roots, made in medium budgets and raked in enough moolahs from the box office to keep the star going good. Tusshar Kapoor too follows his dad's footsteps! And with his present career state not so stabilized (after Kucch To Hai, Kya Dil Ne Kaha and Yeh Dil), he pairs up with Amrita Arora (who herself is struggling to find a firm establishment in Bollywood) and Gracy Singh in T. Trivikrama Rao's produced 'Shart - The Challenge' (earlier titled Dil Tera Badmaash) which is directed by Poori Jagannath. A remake of Telegu hit 'Badri' (which incidentally starred Amisha Patel); it has music by Anu Malik and lyrics by Sameer.

To begin with, you are a bit confused to hear - 'I am an Indian' as the opening track of the album. Why? Because from the look of the album cover and the publicity so far, there hasn't been any impression of patriotic undertones in 'Shart'. Lyrics go something like - 'I am an Indian, Hardam Indian, I love being Indian, Very much an Indian'. Just an OK song, it is even more surprising to see 'Sonu Nigam' spelled as Sonu 'Nigham'. When you drill down further for other songs, you see Shreya Goshal as 'Sreya Ghosal' and 'Poornima' as 'Purnima'! Some numerology in force here, is it? Not utterly convinced by this patriotic number you move on to the next song and to your horror you are subjected to some inane lyrics like 'Hey Chiquita como estas'. Has Mr. Sameer started writing in Spanish? Because these lines in Spanish mean "Hey Girl, how are you'. But sir, how many poor souls will actually understand the meaning?

With all hopes lost and in a state of shock you pessimistically move forward to 'Hum Pyaar Kar Baithe' (printed as 'bayete' on the inlay card). What the song manages to do is revive some interest in the album, as it turns out to be fairly good number. Though predictable and often heard, this track by Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik is still OK considering the aftermath of the previous one. Comes next another sugarcoated love song - 'Dil To Awara Hai' by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Goshal. An average track with not much in terms of content, it comes as a gap-filler.

Anu Malik's rock'n'roll is back in 'Dil Tera Badmaash Hai'. A foot tapping number by Sonu Nigam and Poornima, what lets it down is the lyrics that go like 'Dil Tera Badmaash Hai...Karta Hai Badmaashiyan'. Kind of a readymade composition by Anu Malik, it has potential to be a small time popular track if publicized well!

The best track of the album comes pretty late in the day - 'Dil Mein Mere Toofan Hai'. Nothing great lyrically (as like most of the tracks in Shart), it is the different tune and some good vocals by Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik that make this one a potential enjoyable track. Though the choreography has been on the lines of Tusshar - Kareena starrer 'Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai', we do not mind as this boyishness suits well on Tusshar. Album ends well too on a satisfactory note as the choosy Abhijeet croons the love solo - 'Hansaati Hai Rulaati Hai, Mohabbat Aajmaati Hai' that has a good slow tune.

A 'not-so-conventional' title of the movie, miniscule publicity (which has just picked up off late), not so hot starcast and a relatively unknown banner - these are some of the negative factors that come in mind once you see 'Shart' on the music stands. You reluctantly pick up the album and think of giving it one chance to see what exactly is in store. In the end, 'Shart' does turn out to be a fairly average musical that doesn't disappoint taking into consideration all the apprehensions that one had in the start!
