Sometimes, interesting subjects loose their sheen if the film takes a long time to hit the marquee. That’s precisely the case with POLICE FORCE – AN INSIDE STORY.
Akshay Kumar [Vijay] is an under-trainee police cadet. He gets absorbed in a system where corrupt politicians crush the dreams of the common man for their selfish interests.
Raj Babbar [Sethi] plays the corrupt politician who subverts the political system at his will. Mohan Joshi plays a senior officer who runs illegal operations for the politicians from inside the department. Amrish Puri plays another senior officer who is an honest cop and trains his cadets with dedication. Akshay is one of his disciples.
Raveena Tandon [Roma] plays Akshay’s love interest in the film. Alok Nath plays her father who also is a senior official and has to decide between helping his future son-in-law and keeping the law.
POLICE FORCE is an apt case of old wine packaged in a new bottle. The Indian cinegoer has witnessed the corrupt cops-manipulative politicians’ plot since time immemorial. Therefore, there’s very little excitement towards such themes.
Any redeeming factors? None, frankly speaking!
The film is a typical masala potboiler that has been treated in the most slipshod manner. In fact, writer-director Dilip Shukla’s treatment of the subject is archaic and might have appealed to the viewers in the 1990s, not in the current scenario.
Although the first half is plain ordinary, the post-interval portions are devoid of thrilling moments. Besides, the goings-on get too monotonous at this juncture and the viewer impatiently waits for the story to end.
Besides lackluster direction, the film is also weak in its music department [Anand-Milind]. In fact, in a film like this, the makers should’ve avoided inserting the songs since it hampers the narrative of the film. In this case, the songs appear forced in the goings-on.
Another drawback of the film is that it looks inconsistent vis-?is the appearance and outfits of the actors. Especially Akshay and Raveena’s appearance gives away completely.
None of the performances really stand out. Akshay goes through his role without much of an effort. His stunts are well executed of course. Raveena looks least interested in the goings-on. Amrish Puri gives a good account of himself. Raj Babbar tends to go over the top. Mohan Joshi is as usual.
On the whole, POLICE FORCE has nothing forceful about it. Dull.
