| Dattaram came to Mumbai in the early '40s. Poor and also uneducated, he worked in Bombay Docks as a labourer. He had learnt the tabla for a few years thanks to the encouragement of his mother, a local singer. Dattaram's fondness for fitness made him go to an akhada where he came across the then-aspiring music director Shankar and through him joined Prithvi Theatres as a musician. After Shankar-Jaikishan hit big-time with Barsaat, Dattaram joined them as a musician with their second film Nagina.
