I haven't really seen Mugle-e-azam so it wouldn't be right of me to compare that movie with Jodhaa Akbar on any kind of level or basis. However, my review does come from someone of today's generation and I would think it'll show through from my review.
What I liked about the movie:
The picturization of the movie was breath-taking, and the costumes as you can imagine were beautifully showcased as well (for both men and women).
In terms of the cast, Hrithik Roshan is like a glove to a hand when it came to playing the role of Jalaluddin Mohammad Akbar. His every expression, every move, and every word screamed royalty. I just loved how he did his homework for that role and what it required out of him. Hrithik as an actor seems very versatile, as in his previous films like Koi Mil gaya where he played a mentally disabled person or Dhoom 2 where he played the image of a bad-boy, he really does own the character, instead of relying on his looks or style to do the work for him.
Speaking of looks and style, my next evaluation comes for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who plays the role of Jodhaa. I have to say, in her earlier films she hasn't really impressed me much, I always get the vibe that she relies on her looks to do the most work, as I think most Indian actresses these days do, if I should even call them that. However, in this movie I did think Aishwarya was good for her part. I wouldn't call it the best, but she was surely fitting. I liked the character of Jodhaa in general. She was really witty and charismatic and I think Aishwarya did a good job displaying that. I do like seeing Mrs. Bachchan in the traditonal roles as I did in Umrao Jaan of hers. I find her more comfortable in those roles vs. mini skirt Dhoom 2's.
It might sound odd but I think out of all Characters in this movie, the one that captured my heart, more so than both Akbar and Jodhaa, have to be the character of Rajkumar Sujamal played by Sonu Sood.
What I didn't like about the movie:
To be honest, when it came to the music, I was not really feeling it. When I left the movie theatre none of the songs from Jodhaa-Akbar were stuck in my head and where rear does that happen with me and hindi movies. On the other hand, I DID however like the fact that music WASN'T the reason for movie being too long and I do think it was because of this reason that the 3 hrs 20 minute movie didn't seem like a drag.
