After much ado about the film, Deepa Mehta's Water, was finally screened at the Toronto Film Festival. And what makes Deepa Mehta even happier is the fact that the film got a standing ovation. In fact this is the first Canadian Hindi film to open the festival, which is quite an achievement. The film stars Lisa Ray and John Abraham. The film is set in India in the 1930s. Lisa Ray plays a widow whereas John Abraham plays an idealistic Gandhian lawyer.

The film was shrouded in controversy when Hindu fundamentalists in Benaras protested against the shooting. The earlier cast comprised of Shabana Azmi and Akshay Kumar. However, Deepa wants to put that chapter behind her, and wants to move on. This movie is the last of her trilogy after Fire (1996) and Earth (1998).
