In a press statement sent to this writer, Yash Chopra has clarified about the controversy pertaining to MANGAL PANDEY. The text of the statement is as follows:

“This is with reference to the reports in the various sections of the media attributing certain statements and observations to me with regard to MANGAL PANDEY.

“I wish to clarify that I hold MANGAL PANDEY in the highest esteem and have tremendous regard for his efforts and sacrifice towards our country’s freedom struggle. I have neither made nor instructed my Advocates to make a statement that MANGAL PANDEY was not a freedom fighter.

“What my Advocates have in fact said is that the film MANGAL PANDEY – THE RISING does not defame or derogate MANGAL PANDEY in any manner but brings to light the efforts and sacrifice put in by MANGAL PANDEY, which history books may not have done full justice to.

“The statements made in court have been misrepresented and quoted out of context in the media reports and do not support my aforesaid views.”
