So what if Paheli didn’t exactly set the box office on fire? The producers of the film are having the last laugh. Paheli has been chosen as India’s official entry for the Oscars which will be held in 2006. The cinematography by Ravi K Chandran was greatly appreciated. Though it wasn’t a box office success in India, the film did well overseas. Paheli is based on a novel by Vijay Dandetha and it has Shah Rukh Khan playing a friendly ghost. Amol Palekar seemed quite thrilled about the film being nominated.
The other films that were considered this year include Mangal Pandey, Veer-Zaara, Iqbal, Swades, Parineeta, Page 3, Black, Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Sachein (Tamil), Anniyan (Telugu), Uttarayan (Marathi), Achuvante Anna (Malayalam), Graham (Telugu), and Kadal (Tamil). Last year, India’s official entry to the Oscars was the small budget Marathi film Shwaas.
