Deepa Mehta whose film Water has been in one controversy after the other, is finally having the last laugh. She has already won a lot of accolade for her film. It was recently showcased at the Bangkok film festival where it won the award for the Best Film.

Water is based on the condition of widows in the Gandhian India. The film was in trouble since it was launched. Hindu extremists protested against it and brought the shooting to a standstill. Mehta even received death threats and was left with no choice but to shelve the project. However, she didn’t lose hope and finally completed the film in Sri Lanka, five years later.

At the Bangkok film festival as well, a Thai studio tried to remove the film from the competition as it was not consulted over the filming. But Mehta had a contract which stated that she has the right to show the film at any festival. Not only was the film screened successfully, but it also fetched the award for Best Film. It is already a big hit at the Canadian box office where Deepa Mehta resides. The film stars John Abraham and Lisa Ray in lead roles.
