Kay Kay Menon's Shoonya to premiere at IndieFocus Click here to add this article to My Clips

By IndiaFM News Bureau, March 14, 2007 - 10:26 IST

Kay Kay Menon’s film Shoonya was one of the 3 films selected to be screened at the prestigious 36th International Film Festival of Rotterdam. The film marks the directorial debut of Arindam Mitra (producer of Black Friday) and also stars Naseeruddin Shah, Satish Kaushik, Tulip Joshi, Seema Biswas and Ninad Kamat. The film was immensely appreciated at the festival for its gritty, un-Bollywood style lensing and brilliant performance by KK Menon.

And now Shoonya reaches Indian shores and will make its Asian premiere at IndieFocus Film Festival to happen in Mumbai from March 16. The premiere will be graced by writer Anurag Kashyap, director Arindam Mitra and actors KK Menon and Seema Biswas.

Happy that the film will finally reach the Indian audience, Kay Kay Menon says “Shoonya is a film which deals with the mind of a sportsman and the trial and tribulations that the sportsman has to go through till he succeeds. It’s a behind the game kind of a film”. Ask him about the director and Kay Kay replies, “Well to tell you about Arindam, he is a student of world cinema. His view about world cinema is very pragmatic and intelligent. This film will also reflect that”.

On the IndieFocus festival front, it will now not open with the Danis Tanovic film Hell that it was earlier supposed to. Danis Tanovic is the director of the Oscar Award winning film ‘No Man’s Land’ that won over Lagaan in the Foreign Language Film category in 2001. A spokesperson from the Festival says, “Our sincere apologies to everybody for not opening with Academy Award winner Danis Tanovic's Hell. Danis had to leave for Sarajevo following a personal crisis and couldn't stay on for the festival. However we promise to screen Hell in one of our future sessions. Danis will introduce the film and do a question and answer session with us”.

A few of the films in the IndieFocus platter are "The Beat That My Heart Skipped" from director Jacques Audiard, “L'Enfant” from director Jean-Pierre Dardenne , “A Bellyful of Dreams” by director Prakash, “Shunyo E Bukey" by Kaushik Ganguly and an interesting mix of short films featured in their ‘Shortscape’ section.
